The Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies
is a new interdisciplinary center at URI working in the area of nonviolence education. We
do nonviolence training locally and internationally using a curriculum based partly on
Martin Luther King's approach to conflict reconciliation and social change, and partly on
social science research. We also do research on the processes and effects of nonviolence
programs. Nonviolence education aims, among other things, to increase the chances
for democratic institutions to prosper and for conflicts to be resolved peacefully. Our
director, Bernard LaFayette, is the chair of the International Nonviolence Conference,
which will meet next in Durban, South Africa, in July 2000.
