URI's Environmental Data Center

Peter August
Professor of Landscape Ecology & GIS

Pete August is the dinosaur of the EDC.  He founded the lab in 1985 with Art Gold (URI NRS) and Bill Wright (Dean of the College, now retired).  The EDC was the 80th installation of Arc/Info in the world.

August teaches GIS classes in the Department of Natural Resources and conducts research in landscape ecology and conservation biology.  The general focus of his research, teaching, and outreach is to use GIS to support intelligent resource management and conservation.

He enjoys trying to keep up with the ever-evolving software, hardware, and data available to support GIS; but is resigned to the fact that you need a lab full of bright and energetic young lads and lasses to have the critical mass to support advanced geospatial data analysis.  And among the awesome staff and students in the EDC, we have that critical mass.

For recreation, August enjoys reading computer manuals for GIS procedures and making maps that have way too much magenta and yellow.  When the network is down, August likes to feed worms and lures to trout in the Wood River, paddle his kayak, ride his mountain bike, and experiment with different recipes that require 8-12 hours of smoking large fatty pieces of meat.
