URI's Environmental Data Center

Mark Christiano
Research Associate III

In the few years Mark has been with the EDC he has worked on several very diverse projects.   They have ranged from tracking the effects of hurricanes on the shorelines in the Gulf of Mexico, to working with URI’s Department of Nutritional Science to develop geographic models delineating individuals’ access to grocery stores.  Mark has done extensive work updating the RIGIS databases and developed several GIS databases for the National Park Service for their ongoing projects.

Mark received his M.E.S.M. at the University of Rhode Island, with specialty areas in  Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis.  As part of his graduate work, Mark developed a protocol for the National Park Service using high resolution satellite imagery to map salt marshes.

In the Fall, Mark teaches LAR 482 Applied GIS Skills for Landscape Architects.  Together with Prof. Green, Mark designed this course to provide students in the Landscape Architecture department with working knowledge of ArcMap that allows them to apply real-world GIS skills to landscape planning.

When we actually let Mark out of the lab he can usually be found clinging to a rock wall or strolling across the golf course.  He also enjoys watching Bruins games and tackling new recipes in the kitchen.
