Narragansett Bay orthophotography, prints, and transparancies were taken during late summer of 2006. Orthophotography is 1:12000 scale and 0.5m resolution. Block Island is also included in the project area.
- Purpose:

Orthophotography was collected for use by the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, Save the Bay, and the University of Rhode Island Environmental Data Center to map and delineate shallow-subtidal estuarine habitats, specifically submerged aquatic vegetation.

These data are believed to be consistent because James W. Sewall Co. performed the following QA/QC techniques:
1) Calibration and internal check of airborne GPS and IMU devices.
2) Feature alignment from photo to photo was checked to assure project specifications.
3) Co-registration check of orthoimagery against downloaded sample datasets such as DOQQs
Orthoimages are also consistent with RIDOT 1:5000 Road Centerline data downloaded from RIGIS state repository of GIS data. Sample observations were within +/- 15 feet of features.

The elevation data utilized for this project was USGS 1:24,000 DEMs. The horizontal accuracy of this data is +/- 50ft. Data accuracies of the rectified images cannot be guaranteed to be better than this input data set. However, listed accuracy of the airborne GPS and IMU devices is +/- 1ft. And the rectified images correlated strongly with the 1:5K RIDOTcenterline road dataset although no formal tests were run.

Aerial photographs were taken using a Zeiss RMK TOP camera using color AGFA x100 film. They were taken in a series of 22 flight lines at an approximate average altitude of 10,000ft. To insure photographs were suitable for photo interpretation of shallow-subtidal habitats, NOAA Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) protocols were followed. Therefore, photographs were taken at a low sun angle, low wind, low tide, and high water clarity. To achieve the desired 1:12000 scale, photos were scanned at a resolution of 675 dpi to yield a photo resolution of 0.5m. Images were orthorectified using data from airborne GPS, IMU, and 1:24K USGS NED DEMs. Images were then mosaiced using OrthoVista which allowed for a degree of automation. The final product was clipped to USGS quadrangles and tiles were compressed to produce a Mr.Sid file format.
