Abstract:
Set of 37 scanned maps of land cover for the State of Rhode Island originally prepared by John J. Kupa and William R. Whitman based on 1962 aerial photographs. Hard-copy originals were scanned, georeferenced, and prepared for distribution via RIGIS.
Purpose:
To provide a statewide dataset representing land cover of Rhode Island as of 1962.

Process_Description:
The panchromatic vertical aerial photographs were taken in February and April 1962 by the Aero Service Corporation of Pennsylvania. After stereoscopic study and delineation of land cover types, the identifications were transferred by vertical sketch masters to US Geological Survey topographic maps at a scale of 1:2000.

In 1972 Kupa and Whitman distributed copies of their maps. In 2010 a set of maps retained by Frank Golet of URI was scanned by Paul Jordan of RIDEM (dpi 600 x 600, 11569 x 15885 Pixels), and then georegistered by Bill Buffum at URI using ArcGIS 9.3 with an adjust transformation for rectification. Most of the georegistration was done with the RIGIS Neatline. In a few cases where this was not possible, it was done with Atlas_imageryBaseMapsEarthCover_NGS_Topographic_Maps.
