Abstract: Several organizations are working together to develop a regional restoration plan and information system for coastal habitats in Rhode Island. These organizations include the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC), the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), Save The Bay (STB), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center. The project will identify socioeconomic and ecological concerns to develop restoration prioritization methodologies and decision-making tools for coastal managers and stakeholders. These data were developed for use in the anadromous fish run site selection tool.

Purpose: Rhode Island's coastal habitats include salt marshes, freshwater wetlands, seagrass beds, anadromous fish runs, beaches and dunes, cliffs and bluffs, coastal grasslands, rocky intertidal zones, coastal ponds, and estuarine embayments. These habitats support a wide variety of plants and animals; they provide natural areas for education and recreation; and they are valuable natural resources that enhance Rhode Island's economy through fishery landings and tourism. Degradation and loss of these areas from dredging, filling, and pollution often have led to decreased water quality, closure of fisheries, pollution of rivers and swimming areas, and sedimentation of wetlands. Currently, a movement to restore and preserve the state's coastal resources is underway; federal, state, nonprofit, and community groups are conducting restoration activities that include restoring tidal flow to restricted salt marshes, removing exotic plant species, planting seagrasses, and restoring anadromous fish runs.

Using maps provided by RIDEM, river and stream segments were selected from the RIGIS 1:24,000 hydrography data set that corresponded to anadromous fish runs. Streams were broken into segments and coded based on dam locations that impede anadromous fish runs. All stream arcs were "flipped" where necessary so that all lines point downstream.

To create connectivity, and to facilitate "upstream"/"downstream" analyses, centerline segments from the RIGIS hydrography polygons were incorporated to connect isolated stream segments.

In order to break the stream network at each fish barrier (dam locations), a node attribute table(NAT) was also created for this data set using the NODE option within the BUILD command. An item (SITE-NUM) was added to the NAT and coded based on the corresponding Habitat Restoration Project Number. Using this item in the table, it is possible to join the stream network to the Habitat Restoration Database.
