Abstract:
In the early 1990's, the first historical eelgrass bed GIS datasets for Narragansett Bay were created as part of
the above eelgrass restoration project. Data was collected from personal interviews, herbarium specimans, literature
reviews, and NOS charts, and ranged from 1848-1994. Applied Science Associates digitized the data into ASAMAP GIS,
but no metadata was documented at the time. This 2000/2001 dataset is a result of importing the ASAMAP
GIS datasets into ArcView and consolidating the files into one shapefile.

NOS survey sheets were analyzed for markings or descriptions of eelgrass locations. Data was digitized into
ASAMAP GIS. Locations of herbarium specimans were digitized into ASAMAP GIS as points. Literature citations
were digitized into ASAMAP GIS as points. Oral interviews were conducted with 12 people from either the
RI Shell Fisherman's Assoc. or the RI Divers Assoc. Each person was asked to describe the organisms they saw
in the grass beds, the activities that people were involved with inside the grass beds, describe the locations,
dates of existence, depths, and possible causes for decline of eelgrass beds. The interviewees drew the locations
of the eelgrass beds on a NOAA chart of Narrgansett Bay. Each location that a person described was assigned a
reliability score on a scale of 1-3 with 1 being the least reliable and 3 being the most reliable. Data were
plotted using ASAMAP GIS.
In October, 2000, the above datasets were converted from ASAMAP into ArcView shapefiles by Applied Science
Associates. The resulting 12 datasets were eventually merged into one shapefile. Two additional attributes,
"YEAR" and "TYPE", were added to the final shapefile to aid in data analysis and were coded directly from the
attribute "NAME".
