Restoration Description:  Fish passage restoration. Fishway construction. Save The Bay has identified the Ten Mile River as the highest priority fish run restoration project in the state. The Slater Mill fishing club has been coordinating efforts to transport fish over the Omega Dam. The Ten Mile River Watershed Alliance seeks to coordinate efforts between Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Target Species:   American shad, river herring

Historic Conditions:  The Ten Mile River historically supported runs of American shad, herring, and Atlantic salmon. Extensive dam construction in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries eradicated these spawning runs. Three dams located in East Providence prevent access to spawning habitat (Omega Dam, Hunts Mill Dam and Turner Reservoir Dam). A remnant of the herring run persists in the lower portion of the river through the efforts of recreational anglers who net fish and toss them over the first dam (Omega Dam) into Omega Pond.
