Project Size: 11 acres Area Benefited: Not documented for this site. Restoration Description: Minimize erosion along by-way road. Restoration Date: Not documented for this site. Target Species: Data not available Historic Conditions: In 1904 construction began for RI Laceworks; in 1910, the company was in full operation. Laceworks used dyes in production. Residents report that the color of the dye being used was visible in the water of Allin's Cove. In 1959 the quarry used the site for dredge material disposal. The area was also used for agriculture in the 1800s. In 1997 demolition of the factory was proposed. Sometime between 1900 and 1920 the Pilling Chain Factory was built. In the 1960s-1970s Krew Frame operated on the second floor of the factory. Pilling Chain manufactured zipper chains and sliders. Acid washings, zinc, plating material, and chrome plating were dumped in Allin's Cove. Krew Frame made metal picture frames. In 1991, all operations at Pilling Chain ended and the space was leased to small businesses (Hill's Auto and Tire, a bicycle storage space, an upholstery shop, a woodworking shop, and insulation shop, and a man who made and sold face creams). In 1996, the factory was renovated for Barrington Apartments, which opened in 1997. Project Contact:
