Graduate Application Process

The Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog of the University of Rhode Island and graduate application materials may be obtained from the Department. The Catalog may be viewed on-line or may be downloaded in .pdf format from the URI web page . Both the domestic application and the international application may be downloaded from the URI Graduate School. Admission requirements for the Department's graduate programs are as follows:

  • Applicants to the Master of Science in Environmental Sciences Program should have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited College or University with a major in biological science, physical science, or engineering.
  • Applicants to the Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences Program should have a Master's degree, with thesis, in biological science, physical science, or natural resources science.
  • Applicants to the Department of Natural Resources Science who do not have an undergraduate or graduate degree in biological or physical science, natural resources science, or engineering may be admitted on the condition that they complete certain basic science courses early in their program. Such remedial coursework may not be used for graduate program credit. Calculus, biology, chemistry, physics, ecology, geology, and soil science are examples of subject matter areas in which remedial coursework may be required.
  • All applicants must have taken the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
  • All applicants from foreign countries must have achieved a score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) on the TOEFL examinations.

An important part of the application package is the 300-word statement of purpose. This document should be prepared with care. The Department will be keen to learn why you are interested in pursuing a graduate degree, what aspect of natural resources science you wish to study, what experiences or qualifications make you an outstanding candidate for admission, which faculty in the Department you would like to study under (and why), and what you hope to achieve with a graduate degree in this field.

The single most important person in your graduate program is your major professor. It is extremely important for you to contact those faculty in the Department who might serve in this role. You should determine, prior to applying, whether the faculty with whom you wish to work are accepting students, what research they are currently pursuing, and if they have financial support for new students. If at all possible, arrange to visit the Department and meet those faculty whose interests are similar to yours. Note, however, that individual faculty do not have authority to accept students into the program. That decision is made by Department of Natural Resources Science Graduate Affairs Committee and the Graduate School.
