Advanced GIS
Class Project Overview
The class project is meant to be a total GIS analysis experience. Upon successful completion of the assignment, you will have exercised nearly all the procedures we have reviewed in class. Here is what is expected of you.
Study Areas: Each student will use the same watershed sub-basin/town in Rhode Island they used for the mid-term project. The mid-term project is due 25 March.
You will be graded on the following deliverables:
Written Report: You are to turn in a 5-page (max) written report that provides the goals, methods, results, and conclusions you have reached in your project. Write this in the format of a scientific paper. I will be very attentive to how clear you are in stating what you want to accomplish, why this is a relevant issue, the suitability of data for your analysis, and possible errors in your analysis (data or processing).
Maps: Three color 8.5"x11" maps or one color 30"x30" poster map showing your analysis. At least one of the maps (or insets) should be the product of a raster modeling exercise. Your maps will be graded on clarity, complexity, rigor, and aesthetic quality.
Technical Rigor: You will be graded on your demonstrated ability to perform the analytical procedures we reviewed this semester. This includes neighborhood analysis, overlay analysis, terrain modeling, raster analysis, generalization (spatial and thematic), and quantitative analysis.
Oral Presentation : Please prepare a 5 min oral overview of your analysis. Tell us what you did, how you did it, what you found, and what worked and didn't work. This will commence at 11:30 AM on 8 May. If you wish to use a PowerPoint set of slides, be sure to have them on memory stick.
Due: Your final project is due no later than 11:30 AM -- May 8 2008 (our final exam period). Please bring everything to the computer lab where we will hear the presentations.
