In April 2004, researchers from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducted swath bathymetry and side scan sonar surveys at Catlett and Goodwin Islands. These data sets will be used in conjunction with the sediment grab sample and sediment profile image data from joint benthic mapping project (completed by VIMS and the NOAA Coastal Services Center). Surveys were conducted using using an interferometric (Swathplus 234 kHz) swath system integrated with a motion sensor (Ixsea Octans) and differential GPS (NorthStar). This raster file contains bathymetry data for Catlett Island.
VIMS and the NOAA Coastal Services Center are using the acoustic, grab, and SPI information (collected in 2002, 2003, and 2004) to characterize benthic habitats by Catlett and Goodwin Islands on the York River, and to examine relationships between animal communities and sediment characteristics.

Field Methods Swath bathymetry and side-scan sonar surveys were conducted at Catlett and Goodwin Islands using an interferometric (Swathplus 234 kHz) swath system integrated with a motion sensor (Ixsea Octans) and differential GPS (NorthStar). Vertical control for tide corrections were made from the NOAA water level observing station at Gloucester Point, Virginia - located within 5 km of both field sites. Surveys were conducted using WGS84, UTM zone 18 as the horizontal datum and Mean Lower Low in meters in the vertical. Goodwin Island survey was conducted on 27 April 2004; Catlett Island was surveyed on 29 April 2004.

The completed scene (scene is a fledermaus data format which includes the DTM, georefrence file, and shade file) from VIMS was imported into Fledermaus software and the digital terrain model (DTM) was extracted. The DTM was exported out as an ASCI raster file and then imported it (using ESRI ArcGIS 8.3) to an ESRI grid. The projection was defined to WGS84, UTM zone 18 using ESRI define projection tool.
