This file contains ocean and bay shoreline, herbaceous vegetation, un-vegetated areas, shrubs, ponds and mudflats on the northern 9.5 kilometers of the island. The original map theme was created in 2005 by walking area perimeters with a GPS unit, or by using aerial photography and creating areas such as shrub zones. Bay shoreline data was extracted from shoreline_0405 and ocean shoreline was extracted from shoreline_0705. Mudflat and island polygons were extracted from the file: ne_veg2000.shp
This is used primarily to document habitat used by piping plovers during their breeding activities on Assateague Island National Seashore, as well as independent sightings of flora or fauna. The north end of Assateague supports a breeding population of plovers, and detailed field maps are used to determine the location of their activities. These maps have been compared from year to year as natural changes occur on the island and often correlate to breeding success.
There is also Piping Plover habitat data for 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2005.

All areas represented in this dataset underwent a comparison between prior datasets and current ground condition in August 2005.
Horizontal positions were by a Trimble ProXR GPS systems, with an accuracy of 1 meter.

Data was collected using two Trimble Pathfinder ProXR DGPS in August 2005. The boundaries of vegetation types were walked while logging positions as either lines or polygons. For the Trimble Pathfinder ProXR DGPS min. PDOP 6.0, min. SV 4. Positions were differentially corrected in real time and then post-processed in Pathfinder Office using VIMS base files. These files were exported as ArcView shapefiles and imported into ArcView v3.3. Lines were converted to polygons using XTools polylines to polygon tool. Intersecting lines and overlapping polygons were corrected in ArcView v3.3. As data was corrected and discrepancies resolved the data was merged as needed. Polygon "donuts" were created using the clip command in the editor interface. The shoreline was created using previously collected GPS data. The ocean shoreline was collected in July 2005. The bay shoreline data was collected in November 2005. These shorelines were combined to create the island outline used for this study. Polygons were clipped to the island shoreline created for 2006. Area and perimeter calculations were computed automatically in ArcView using XTools.

Shrub polygons were created using aerial photography taken in October 2003 of the north end of Assateague Island and ArcMap v8.1. Doughnuts were created for inset polygons.

Mudflat and island polygons were extracted from the file: ne_veg2000.shp, and merged with the previously mentioned data to create this final dataset.

Classification of Vegetation
ASIS
A wide range of vegetation alliances and geomorphic features that support little or no apparent vegetation. This includes: overwash flats and fans, depositional areas (shell/gravel beds), pond margins bay margin above the normal tide line, dune swales, unvegetated dunes, areas supporting sparse associations of annuals, wet sand flats (low areas of near-permanent saturated soils, that are not flooded by daily activity, with or without a cover of algal mats.) As a general reference, sparsely vegetated habitat is broadly clumped into three units: low, moist soils, active overwash fans, and uplands (dunes or storm berm.)
ASIS
A generic habitat name for woody vegetation, generally when an area of shrubs/trees expand to the point of recognition from a distance( is a recognizable landscape feature.)
ASIS
An alliance of vegetation recognized on a community level, generally composed of herbaceous species growing at a minimum of 20% density and a minimum area of 25 square meters. Some herbaceous habitats are labeled by the alliance's dominant species (AmBr, SpAl, SpPa, ScPu), or areas can be described as a general upland or wetland.
ASIS
inner tidal landforms that are disconnected from Piping Plover habitat.
ASIS
also referred to as ponds these bodies of water are cut off from the ocean. These bodies of water are mapped, but since Piping Plovers are non-aquatic, are generally not considered as habitat.
