The objective of the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council winter flounder habitat mapping project was to develop the first geo-spatial databases of sampling stations and winter flounder population abundance from data collected by the Department of Environmental Management-Fish and Wildlife from 1979 through 1999, in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island Sound, and Block Island Sound in the state of Rhode Island. The project was accomplished through the technical expertise of the University of Rhode Island Environmental Data Center and in coordination with the National Marine Fisheries Service Milford Laboratory and the RIDEM Division of Fish and Wildlife. The resulting geo-spatial coverages will serve as the basis for further spatial and temporal analyses of winter flounder as well as future assessment of several other important commercial fisheries. Coming studies will integrate marine habitat and land use information for a more comprehensive ecological monitoring and assessment of Rhode Island fisheries. Purpose: Mapping winter flounder abundance at different depths as well as, to quantify the extent of marine habitats of many other important fisheries in Rhode Island waters.
