These data represent worst case hurricane surge inundation areas for category 1 through 4 hurricanes striking the coast of Rhode Island. Hurricane surge values were developed by the National Hurricane Center using the SLOSH (Sea Lake Overland Surge from Hurricanes) model. In turn, these hurricane surge values were used by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, to determine what areas could be expected to be inundated.
These data were originally created to assist emergency management officials with hurricane preparedness and operations. The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency has both hurricane evacution maps and worst-case scenario hurricane inundation area maps available online.
Please keep in mind that these data are based on results from a worst-case scenario model and are intended to estimate areas of concern in the event of a hurricane. Do not rely on these data in the event of a hurricane.
