Title: Nearshore Habitats, Narragansett & Mt. Hope Bay (linears)
Description:
Abstract:
ArcInfo polygon coverage describing areal features:
Submerged aquatic vegetation (sav) primarily eelgrass, coastal wetlands, shoreline, and selected coastal features of Narragansett and Mt Hope Bay, delineated from true color aerial photography at 1 to 12,000 and 1 to 40,000 scale (taken 7/6/96 & 8/11/96) aclassified and coded according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's "Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States. (Cowardin, 1979; reprinted 1992).
Changes in the size, density, dominance, or composition of the coastal vegetation may have occurred since date of photography.
Photo-interpretation of submerged aquatic vegetation was limited by water clarity, light penetration, and water depth.
Linear features represent habitat areas approximately 15 to 40 feet in width. These features were too small to map as polygons at the target minimum polygonal mapping units .5 acre for eelgrass beds; .25 acre for isolated (discrete) coastal wetlands and features, and 3 to 5 acres for internal polygons
The shoreline is a representation of the inland edge of coastal features as photo-interpreted from the 1:40,000 scale aerial photography.
All maps created with this data are for planning purposes only.
Aerial photography by J.W Sewell Company. Interpreted by the UMASS Natural Resources Assessment Group.
Purpose: Planning study for critical habitat protection; inventory of eelgrass beds.
Supplemental Information: Funding for this project was provided by: U.S. EPA, RIDEM Aqua Fund and Narragansett Bay Estuary Programs, and Save The Bay, Inc. The City of Warwick, RI was involved as cooperative partner.

Items in the Arc Attribute Table
CODE
An alpha numeric classification that corresponds to the type of wetland/eelgrass bed.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin,et. al., 1979)
Example: E2EM1Pd6 is Estuarine Intertidal Emergent Persistent Ditched Brackish
The first character is the System:
E=Estuarine, M=Marine
The second number is the Sub System:
1=Subtidal, 2=Intertidal
The third and fourth characters comprise the Class:
AB = Aquatic Bed
UB = Unconsolidated Bottom
EM = Emergent
RF = Reef
RS = Rocky Shore
SS = Scrub-shrub
US = Unconsolidated Shore
SB = Streambed
The fifth number is the Sub-Class:
AB1 = Aquatic Bed, Algal
AB3 = Aquatic Bed, Rooted Vascular
AB4 = Aquatic Bed, Floating Vascular
UB = Has no subclasses
EM1 = Emergent, Persistent
EM5 = Emergent, Phragmites australis
RF2 = Reef, Mollusc
RS1 = Rocky Shore, Bedrock
RS2 = Rocky Shore, Rubble
SS1 = Scrub Shrub, Broad Leaved Deciduous
US1 = Unconsolidated Shore, Cobble-Gravel
US2 = Unconsolidated Shore, Sand
US3 = Unconsolidated Shore, Mud
The 6th character is the Water Regime:
L = Subtidal
N = Tidal, Regularly Flooded
P = Tidal, Irregularly Flooded
M = Tidal, Irregularly Exposed
If the CODE is E1AB3L or M1AB3L, then the 7th character is a Special Modifier for percent cover:
e = % Cover cannot be determined; eelgrass signature is present, but there is no density
d = 70% to 100% cover
c = 40% to 69% cover
b = 10% to 39% cover
a = < 10% cover
If the CODE is NOT E1AB3L or M1AB3L, then the 7th character is a Special Modifier for human impact:
d = ditched
h = diked / impounded
r = artificial substrate
x = excavated
The 8th character is the Water Chemistry:
6 = Brackish
grp_2
Consolidation of CODE values into 20 groups for cartographic production
UPL = Uplands
DUNE = Dunes
EAB = Estuarine Aquatic Beds (Eelgrass)
EOW = Estuarine Open Water
ESM = Estuarine Salt Marsh
EBM = Estuarine Brackish Marsh
EPM = Estuarine Phragmites Marsh
EPBM = Estuarine Phragmites Brackish Marsh
OR = Oyster Reefs
RS = Rocky Shores
ESSW = Estuarine Scrub Shrub Wetland
EB = Estuarine Beaches and Tidal Flats
ETFPP = Estuarine Pannes, Pools and Irregulary Exposed Flats
MAB = Marine Aquatic Bed, Eelgrass
MOW = Marine Open Water
MRS = Marine Rocky Shore

SB = Streambeds
grp_2_desc
Descriptive text for grp_2 as shown above
grp_3

removes the distinction between estuarine and marine features
Length
length in feet of discrete arcs
software calculated
